Canada Student Visa Application Process

1. Acceptance Letter: Firstly, you’ll need to get an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. A DLI is a school, university or college that’s allowed to host international students. 2. Eligibility Check: Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian study permit. You must:
   • Have an acceptance letter from a DLI
   • Have a valid passport or travel document
   • Prove that you have enough money to pay for your:
     • Tuition fees
     • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada, and
     • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
   • Be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada (you may have to provide a police certificate)
   • Be in good health (you may need to complete a medical exam)
   • Convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your studies.
3. Prepare Documents: Prepare the documents necessary for application. This usually includes:
   • A completed Student Permit application form
   • An original and a copy of your acceptance letter from the DLI
   • An original and a copy of your valid passport. Your passport should be valid for the length of your stay. For instance, if you plan to stay in Canada for five years, your passport should be valid for five years.
   • Two recent passport-size photographs
   • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements, scholarship notification, etc)
   • If applicable, a letter explaining why you’re applying for a study permit, even though you may not need one.
4. Application: You typically apply online for the Study Permit through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. To apply online, you’ll need a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents, and a valid credit or debit card.
5. Biometrics and Interview: After you’ve applied, you might need to appear in person to give biometrics. Some applicants may also need to have an interview at the Canadian embassy or consulate in their home country.
6. Processing: Wait for the application to be processed. Processing times vary based on the country of origin, but you can check average processing times on the IRCC website.
7. Decision: If your application is approved, you’ll receive a letter of introduction confirming the approval. This isn’t your study permit but will need to be presented upon arrival in Canada. You’ll also receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to enter Canada.
8. Arrival in Canada: Upon your arrival in Canada, you will present your passport, letter of introduction, and other documents to the border services officer. If the officer finds everything is in order, they will issue your study permit and allow you into Canada.
